They work to provide tenants with the skills they need to preserve their apartments and secure needed repairs and services. They offer: Tenant Counseling - to help you protect your homes; Workshops - to keep you informed of issues that affect your homes and they can set up an Organization to effect positive change to protect your homes.
Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation A’s purpose is to provide high-quality legal assistance to low-income individuals and community groups in Brooklyn. They view legal assistance in terms of community development, education, and mobilization, as well as traditional representation. To that end, they partner with and provide legal services to effective local grassroots organizations that have a demonstrated commitment to the common goal of social and economic justice.
Bushwick Housing & Legal Assistance is a program, within the 30 year-old Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council, that has been helping tenants avoid eviction and obtain repairs in the Bushwick neighborhood for close to a decade. They have successfully represented clients in non-payments, holdovers, and HP proceedings in Housing Court as well as at NYCHA hearings.
Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens Homebase program in partnership with the NYC Department of Homeless Services provides assistance in Queens to prevent families from becoming homeless.
Established in 1993, CAMBA Legal Services, Inc.(CLS) is the legal services arm of CAMBA, providing free legal services to poor and working poor New York City residents in the areas of Housing, Immigration, Government Benefits and Consumer Law.
MET Council on Housing operates a number of tenant-assistance programs, run by their members, including a tenants' rights telephone hotline and a walk-in clinic, which serves thousands per year and is free and open to any New York City tenant. Housing Court Answers provides Information Tables in the City’s Housing Courts staffs a hotline for callers with information about housing law, rent arrears assistance, and homeless prevention guidance. They staff an Information Table at 250 Broadway to assist public housing and section 8 tenants in termination hearings. HCA also conducts trainings for community groups, unions, elected officials and others on Housing Court procedures, eviction prevent programs and housing law. And, last but most important, HCA fights every day for the rights of unrepresented people in Housing Court.
In 2011, under the leadership of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, New York State enacted the greatest expansion of rent regulations in 40 years. In 2012, to increase compliance with these laws and further protect rent-regulated tenants, Governor Cuomo created the Tenant Protection Unit (TPU) to act as a proactive law enforcement office within New York State Homes and Community Renewal. The TPU preserves affordable housing by detecting and curtailing patterns and practices of landlord fraud and harassment through audits, investigations, and impactful legal actions. The TPU also encourages compliance by informing tenants and owners of their rights and responsibilities under the rent regulation laws.
